Court rules against FIFA, UEFA ban of European Super League

The European Court of Justice issued a landmark ruling on Thursday, favoring the formation of the Super League and delivering a significant setback to both FIFA and UEFA, the global and European football governing bodies, respectively.InformationGuideNigeria

The court determined that FIFA and UEFA cannot misuse their dominant positions to impede the establishment of the Super League or penalize clubs intending to participate in it. In its statement, the court highlighted that the regulatory powers of FIFA and UEFA lack specific criteria, leading to an abuse of their dominant positions. Additionally, the court deemed their rules regarding approval, control, and sanctions as arbitrary and unjustified restrictions on the freedom to provide services.NYSC Portal

However, the court clarified that its judgment does not imply automatic approval for the Super League project. It emphasized that it was not making a ruling on the project’s specific merits but was instead addressing the broader legal context of its potential establishment.

FIFA and UEFA had argued against the Super League, backed by A22, on legal grounds. Nevertheless, the European Court of Justice’s ruling contradicts their position.JAMB Portal

This opposition led to many clubs withdrawing from the project. Real Madrid and Barcelona are currently the only remaining clubs from the original group, which also included Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus, and AC Milan. These clubs exited the Super League following protests from their supporters.
