Customs agents urge FG to address exchange rate crisis

Licensed customs agents in Nigeria have highlighted the need for the Federal Government to address critical economic issues, particularly regarding exchange rates and taxation, to enhance the performance of the maritime sector. This call was made during separate discussions with The PUNCH in Lagos.JAMB Result

Mr. Lucky Amiwero, the founder of the National Council of the Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents, pointed out that the maritime sector is currently facing significant economic challenges.JAMB Portal

The agents urged the government to take decisive actions to address these issues. They believe that resolving concerns around exchange rates and taxation could lead to improvements in the maritime industry, which is a vital component of Nigeria’s economy. Additionally, they called for attention to other economic factors impacting the sector, underscoring the need for a holistic approach to revitalizing maritime operations and enhancing its contribution to the national economy.NYSC Portal

“The government should look into the economic issues; it is not a political thing. It has affected almost every person in the country apart from the few elites who are benefiting from it. It is something that the government should focus on, because it has affected a lot of people. So many people can’t send their children to school. Importers no longer bring in goods as usual,” Amiwero remarked.

“The government should address the issues of floating of the exchange rates. The government should look at the economic issues, move the economy out of politics, and address it properly. It is affecting everybody.

“The government has not increased any taxation; it is the floating exchange rate and fuel subsidy that is affecting the sector,” he argued.
