Mason Mount has new competition for the Manchester United role he was signed to play

The tactitian has complained about the lack of consistency he’s been able to build in team selections and the problems players have had in developing rhythm and partnerships, but to his credit, he is now well aware that he has more choices than perhaps ever before as United manager.

“For the first time since I was the manager, we can pick a team from the squad that is probably the strongest,” he said of the trip to Molineux, just after seeing off Newport County 4-2 in the FA Cup fourth round.

That win included starts for Lisandro Martinez (for the first time since September 20), Luke Shaw (December 23) and Casemiro (November 1), while Harry Maguire was back on the bench for the first time since December 12.

With so many key players returning Ten Hag will need to find a higher level of performances than United have displayed recently, but individually it is Mount that provides the highest level of intrigue. He is 12 games into his United career but this feels like a chance to start again, although the role he was signed to play might no longer be available.

Ten Hag envisioned a midfield of Casemiro, Mount and Bruno Fernandes this season, but that trio struggled in the five games they started together, with Casemiro and Mount finding it difficult to match up physically to the opposition midfield.JAMB Result

There can be no getting away from the fact that Mount’s start to life at Old Trafford was underwhelming. He arrived early enough to enjoy a near full pre-season but he didn’t seem to benefit in the way that might have been expected, even accounting for the fact that he was returning to a central midfield role, having played so much football at Chelsea in advanced areas.

When talking about his new signing for the first time, having followed Mount’s career since a 2017/18 loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem, Ten Hag outlined what he expected.

“His vision is to play the offensive [midfield role]. But also he wants to be multi-functional, he wants to be complete,” he said. “When you‘re playing in midfield, you have to attack, but you also have to defend. I’m sure he will bring dynamism into our game and that was one of our analysis conclusions we made after last season. We need [to be] more dynamic in the midfield department.”

United looked less dynamic in midfield rather than more dynamic at the start of the season and Mount is now already under pressure for his place in the side. Casemiro returned to the deeper role against Newport County, but it is 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo who has brought dynamism to the centre of the pitch.
