Nigerian Police Apprehend 67 for Attending Gay Wedding

Authorities in Nigeria — where homosexuality and same-sex sexual relationships remain criminal offenses — have reportedly arrested 67 people for attending the wedding of two men in Ekpan, the latest in a wave of anti-gay incidents across sub-Saharan Africa.JAMB Portal

The Delta State Police Command made the arrests Monday morning. Police stormed the Teebulus Hotel at approximately 2 a.m., after learning “a suspected gay wedding ceremony” was being held there.

At first, over 200 wedding guests were arrested. The couple was also arrested Monday morning.

In a post to both Facebook and X/Twitter, police spokesman Bright Edafe shared a photo of the suspects and bragged that he “paraded them today” outside Ekpan Police headquarters for the media.JAMB Result

Some of the suspects were crowded by news crews and asked rude, often personal questions.

While Edafe claims 67 were arrested, the Delta State Police Command said on Facebook more than 100 people had been charged.

It is not uncommon to be arrested simply for being gay in Nigeria. The guilty face up to 14 years of prison in the conventional court system. In the country’s 12 northern states, the accused face death by stoning.

Edafe spoke to reporters outside the police station. “We are in Africa and we are in Nigeria,” he said. “We cannot copy the Western world because we don’t have the same culture.”

Edafe added: “This is not something that will be allowed in Nigeria.”informationguidenigeria
