Nigerians lament over DStv AFCON no-show

The excitement of Nigerian football fans anticipating the broadcast of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on television was significantly dampened by an announcement from Multichoice. According to a report by PUNCH Sports Extra, the popular Sub-Saharan Africa pay-TV service provider stated that they will not be airing the biennial tournament on their DStv channels.InformationGuideNigeria

This announcement, made just nine days before the tournament’s commencement, which is scheduled to run from January 13 to February 11 in Ivory Coast, comes as a major disappointment to Nigerian football enthusiasts. SuperSport Channel, which is part of the DStv bouquet and known for broadcasting a wide range of football content, confirmed that they had not secured the rights to broadcast the 2023 AFCON.NYSC Portal

DStv has been a crucial source for football broadcasts in Africa, especially for Nigerian subscribers. The inability to watch the Super Eagles compete for their fourth title in this prestigious tournament has left many fans disheartened.

Ibukun Aluko, a football analyst, likened this broadcasting blackout to the national disappointment of Nigeria not winning the title.

“DSTV not showing the AFCON 2023 is as bad as Nigeria not winning the AFCON. This isn’t good news at all for Africa, he said.

“AFCON won’t be on DStv. This is actually crazy. How exactly are we supposed to watch it now?” a puzzled Mazi Olisaemeka queried.JAMB Portal

Another enthusiast, Pope Lazarus also lamented, “How do we watch European games but can’t watch African games happening right here in the continent because of rights?”JAMB Result

“No wonder I have been looking out for the AFCON advert on SS since December but it was nowhere. I started asking questions if SS doesn’t want to portray AFCON like the World Cup. This is sad,” Vit IwuChukwu also bemoaned.
