NSA invites striking labour leaders for talks

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has taken an active step in addressing the ongoing nationwide strike by convening a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). This move comes amidst escalating tensions and unresolved issues that have led to widespread industrial action.InformationGuideNigeria

The willingness of the labour leaders to attend this meeting remains uncertain. However, Festus Osifo, the National President of the TUC, in an interview with Arise Television, expressed openness to a “reasonable and sincere” dialogue, indicating a potential for constructive discussions.

A source informed PUNCH Online that the meeting, initiated by the NSA’s office, is scheduled for the afternoon. This development follows a recent incident involving the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, who was reportedly attacked in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1. This incident, along with ongoing labor disputes in Imo State, has fueled the current strike.JAMB Portal

In a significant development, Ribadu announced the arrest of some suspects connected to the attack on Ajaero. He also confirmed that investigations into the matter had commenced, demonstrating a response to the concerns raised by the labor unions.

The ongoing strike has been partly attributed to the contentious arrest of Ajaero, who was detained by the police prior to a state-wide protest in Imo. The NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah, disclosed this arrest, although the police later clarified that Ajaero was taken into protective custody to avert a mob attack. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma further complicated the situation by accusing Ajaero of interfering in the state’s political matters.JAMB Result

In response to these developments, the NLC and TUC have rallied their affiliates, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, National Union of Electricity Employees, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, to participate in the nationwide strike. This coordinated action underscores the gravity of the situation and the unions’ determination to address their grievances.
