About FUTA

The Federal University of Technology Akure was founded in 1981 under a drive by the government of Nigeria to create universities that specialised in producing graduates with practical as well as theoretical knowledge of technologies. Brief History of FUTA

In 1980, one of the policy thrusts in the education of civilian government headed by Alhaji Aliyu Shehu Shagari was the creation of new universities of technology. The purpose, as announced by government, was in line with the national policy on education, with respect to technical and scientific training; namely, to develop, at every stage of the education system, a scientific and technological attitude in preparation for the nation’s technological take-off. Thus, the states that had no federal universities — Bauchi, Benue, Gongola, Imo, Niger, Ogun and Ondo — became the immediate beneficiaries of this initiative. Dollar to Naira Rate

In the same year, three such institutions were named for Bauchi, Benue and Imo. The other four were to commence in 1981. citation needed The Federal University of Technology, Akure thus came into being in 1981.

By August, the government appointed the pioneer chancellor, HRH Alhaji Zulkarnaini Gambari Mohammed, Emir of lIorin. At that time, a 13-member Governing Council was announced, although the chairman was not named until October. On November 19, 1981, late Professor Theodore Idibiye Francis was appointed the vice-chancellor of the new university. Professor Francis had been a renowned professor of medicine at the University of Ibadan medical school (University College Hospital) and later moved to the newly established Institute of Health Sciences of the University of Port Harcourt as foundation provost. From Port Harcourt Francis moved to Akure on January 1, 1982 to begin the work of getting the university on a footing. One of the first things he did was to recruit senior staff with whom to begin the vistas of the foundation work. the first senior staff member of the new university (other than his personal driver, Mr. Etim Udoh) as the first administrative officer, on January 12, 1982. Objectives/Roles OF FUTA

Here are the objectives of FUTA below.

  1. creation of an enabling environment conducive for research,
  2. provision of specific budgetary allocation for funding of research activities,
  3. systematic implementation of programmes aimed at attracting external funding and
    sponsorship of research, and
  4. provision of institutional support (by way of payment of page charge) for the
    dissemination of research outcomes particularly in high-impact journals.
  5. to protect, promote, and exploit the intellectual property developed in the University,
    and to encourage the commercialisation of such intellectual products;
  6. to promote research-based teaching to enhance scholarship through the synergy of
    research, professional practice, technical skills acquisition, and teaching as a base for
    learning;
  7. Advance the mission of the University as a primary source and facilitator of basic and
    applied research;
  8. to harness the expertise of the University staff for engagement in all forms of research
    activities that can advance knowledge, cultural and social development, preservation of the environment, and enhance economic, industrial, and technological
    growth;
  9. to develop blueprints for research in sync with its strategic plans that would be of
    regional, national, and international relevance and build on the strengths of the
    University and/or create strengths which the University has identified as a priority;
  10. Sustain coordinated plans and effective management policies and practices that

The university has nine Schools:

  • School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS)
  • School of Environmental Technology (SET)
  • School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET)
  • School of Agricultural and Agricultural Technology (SAAT)
  • School of Management Technology (SMAT)
  • School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS)
  • School of Health and Health Technology (SHHT)
  • School of Computing (SOC)

The school runs pre-degree science programs, Short-Term courses and University Advanced Basic Science programs.

Notable Achievements of FUTA

  1. FUTA Ranks 7th in Ranking Web of Universities
  2. In FUTA, Augustine Igiebor, a 200 level student of Mechanical Engineering collaborated with three experienced academic engineers in the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology to develop a fuelless generator. Igiebor said the idea to develop the generator started in 2017 when he got admission to the University.
  3. FUTA scholar wins international grant for genetic engineering, biotechnology research in 2020
  4. FUTA won First and Second Positions at National Cyber Security Competition for 2019. This was under the aegis of the Nigeria Cybersecurity Conference (NaiiaSecCon) held in  Lagos on May 3, 2019.
  5.  FUTA students emerged as the best Microsoft Software Designers among University students in Nigeria and represented Nigeria in the United States and were rewarded for advancing the name of the University.
  6. FUTA has a robust staff development programme that allows teaching, non-teaching, and administrative staff to pursue higher academic qualifications.
  7. The Senate of FUTA has approved the Criteria for the award of Professor Emeritus within the 2010/2011 academic session. It may soon become the first University of Technology to award Professor Emeritus shortly!
  8. FUTA Newsletters reveals many of the staff members who have been awarded diverse research grants locally, nationally and internationally. Staff members of FUTA (and in some cases with their students) undertake international conferences and workshops almost on a yearly basis bringing diverse linkages and collaborations to the University.

 Challenges Facing FUTA

1. The Disrespect for monarchs: The Akure community leaders and stakeholders, under the auspices of the ACDF, said: “The community observed with utter disappointment and shock the manner in which Daramola has dragged the Deji-in-Council and the community into contempt with his utterances and behaviour.

2. The problem of incessant death has been recorded in FUTA.

3. Inadequate Funding: identified inadequate funding as one of the major challenges facing the institution. It has been noted that the Federal Government allocation to the university had drastically reduced in recent times. The school has been surviving through the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
