The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, originally the Federal University of Agriculture, is a federal university in Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria was established as a specialized University by a Federal Government of Nigeria Decree No 48 of November 1992. It began formal activities in May 1993 with the appointment of the first Council and Vice-Chancellor Professor Placid C. Njoku on 27 May 1993, while other key officials of the University were appointed later.
The first set of students were admitted into the institution during the 1993/94 academic year with a population of 82.

Brief History of MOUAU
The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, formerly Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike, was established as a specialized University by the Federal Government of Nigeria via Decree No 48 of 2nd November 1992. It began formal activities on May 1993 with the appointment of the first Council and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Placid C. Njoku on 27th May 1993, while other key officials of the University were appointed later. Prof. Francis Ogbonnaya Otunta, a distinguished Professor of Mathematics is the 5th and present Vice-Chancellor of the University. He assumed office on Tuesday, March 1, 2016.
The Institution is located in the well-known Agricultural Training and Research town of Umudike, about 9 kilometres from Umuahia town, the capital of Abia State. The major link road to the University is the Umuahia – Ikot Ekpene Federal Road, a direct route to the State capitals of Abia, Akwa – Ibom, and Cross River. Being close to Umuahia, the University is linked through a major North-South Express Road to most parts of the country. It commenced its activities at the premises of the former Federal College of Agriculture, Umudike (At present the Federal College of Agriculture has been moved to Ishiagu, Ebonyi state).
The first set of students were admitted into the institution during the 1993/94 academic year with a student population of 82. PHILOSOPHY
The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike conceives food as one of the indicators of state power and national security. The University is anchored on the philosophy that national development could be enhanced by properly integrated and coordinated agricultural education. Thus, the University strives to contribute to Nigeria’s greatness through self-sufficiency in food and fibre production as disseminated through teaching, research, training and extension. Objectives/Roles OF MOUAU
The objectives of the Michael University of Agriculture, Umudike are as follows:
- To encourage the advancement of learning and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex, or political conviction, the opportunity of acquiring higher education in Agriculture;
- To develop and offer academic and professional programmes leading to the award of diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate research, and higher degrees which emphasize planning, technical, maintenance, developmental and adaptive skills in Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Engineering Technology and allied professional disciplines with the aim of producing socially mature persons with capacity to improve on those disciplines and develop new ones, but also to contribute to the scientific transformation of agriculture in Nigeria;
- To act as agents and catalysts, through postgraduate training, research, and innovation for the effective and economic utilization, exploitation and conservation of Nigeria’s natural, agricultural, economic and human resources;
- To offer to the general population as a form of public service, the results of training and research in agriculture and allied disciplines and to foster the practical application of those results;
- To establish an appropriate relationship with other national institutions involved in training, research and development of agriculture;
- To identify the agricultural problems and needs of Nigeria and to find solutions to them within the context of overall national development;
- To provide and promote sound basic scientific training as a foundation for the development of agriculture and allied disciplines, taking into account indigenous culture, the need to enhance national unity, the need to vastly increase the adequate preparation of graduates for self-employment in agriculture and allied professions;
- To promote and emphasize teaching, research, and extension of agricultural knowledge including agriculture extension services and outreach programmes, in-service training, continuing education, and on-farm adaptive research;
- To offer an academic programme in relation to the training of manpower for agriculture in Nigeria;
- To organize research relevant to training in agriculture with emphasis on small scale farming;
