The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) was established on 5 February 1964 in response to the Defence needs of independent Nigeria to train officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. Brief History of Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna

The NDA was established in February 1964 as a reformation of the British-run Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC), which had been renamed the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) on independence. The military institution trains the officer corps of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force. The initial class had only 62 cadets, and the trainers were mostly officers in the Indian Army. The Nigerian National Defence Academy (NDA) follows the pattern of similar NDA in Khadakwasla, Pune, India. The first commandant of NDA was Indian Army Brigadier M.R Verma. The NDA grew to an all Nigerian training staff only in 1978. In 1981 itself began bilateral training of foreign militaries. In 1985 the academy commenced offering undergraduate programmes to Military Officers In Training and now also currently offers post-graduate studies both for Msc and Ph.D. for both military and civilian students alike.  Npower Recruitment

The central mission remains the training of young officer cadets in the 5 years “Regular Combatant Course” in which cadets are groomed in Military, Academic, and Character development to instil discipline and leadership skills according to global best practices, culminating in the award of a bachelor’s degree and presidential commissioning into the rank of second lieutenant for Army cadets or equivalent in the Navy and Air Force for respective cadets. The current Commandant is Major General IM Yusuf who was the former registry of the academy. He took over from Maj Gen S Yaro.[2]Before his appointment, Yaro was the general managing director, Nigerian Army Welfare Limited by Guarantee (NAWLG).[3]

The role of the Academy is to provide each officer cadet with knowledge, skills and values necessary to meet the requirements of a military officer through military, academic and character development. The Nigerian Defence Academy (in this Act referred to as “the Academy”) shall continue to be a military institution and shall have powers to award its own degrees in accordance with the highest academic standards as may be prescribed by the National Universities Commission.

The Academy shall provide each officer cadet with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to meet the requirements of a military officer through military, academic, and character development.

Objectives/Roles OF Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna

Here are some of the objectives of NDA Kaduna: Waec Result

(1)    provide each officer cadet with a broad, balanced curriculum, consisting of military and academic training, general and professional military education, designed to serve as a foundation for his progressive development as an officer in the Armed Forces of Nigeria; Jamb form 

(2)    develop in each officer cadet, a commitment to those moral qualities required for leadership that are defined by the ideals of unity, honor, and service to the country;

(c)    provide the necessary leadership training opportunities for the officer cadet to help his capabilities and skills as a leader;

(3)    develop in each officer cadet, the physical attributes, and skills necessary to meet the requirements of a commissioned officer;

(4)    encourage the advancement of learning and hold out the opportunity of acquiring higher education in liberal, scientific, engineering, and any other discipline to officer cadets of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and those of any other nations that the Federal Government of Nigeria, may, from time to time, decide;

(5)     prepare officer cadets to earn degrees in those disciplines which are of special interest to the needs and aspirations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Notable Achievements of Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna

Quite a number of humble strides have been made by our noble and prestigious academy. Some of our modest achievements are cataloged as follows:

A total of 17,598 officers have so far graduated from NDA. This figure comprises 7,392 Regular Combatant officers, 8,506 Direct Short Service, Short Service and Executive Commission officers and 455 foreign officers from Benin , Liberia, Chad,Guinea, The Gambia, Niger, Sierra Leone,Uganda and Zimbabwe. The Academy is presently training cadets from the Republic of Liberia and Togo.

Since inception of the degree programme in 1985, the Academy has produced 3,435 graduate officers in various disciplines. NDA now boasts of a Postgraduate School that consists of 3 Faculties with 14 degree awarding Departments.

Another area of achievement is the establishment of an information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre that facilitates research and effective instruction. Currently, the academy free to air wireless internet service runs for 24 hours daily in every part of the institution.

NDA has the only ultra modern naval simulation trainer in the sub region.
