Brief History of UNILAG

The history of  the University of Lagos dates back to 1962. The establishment of UNILAG 1962 was as a result of the need to intensify the training of a professional workforce for a newly independent Nigeria, in search of rapid industrialization and economic development. It was however quite evident that the country lacked the requisite workforce to actualise the people’s dream. To this end, the Federal Government established the Eric Ashby Commission on Post School Certificate and Higher Education in Nigeria in May 1959. The Ashby Commission’s report, titled Investment in Education, recommended the establishment of a new university in Lagos, the then Federal Capital, to offer day and evening courses in Commerce, Business Administration, Economics and Higher Management Studies. In 1961, the Federal Government assigned the detailed planning of the new university to a UNESCO Advisory Commission. However, whereas the Ashby Commission had envisaged a non-residential institution which would be cited in the business district of Central Lagos, the UNESCO Commission opted for a traditional university, “a complete all-encompassing institution” with residential accommodation on a large campus. UNILAG Mandate/Act

The mandate of UNILAG is to coordinate and develop research studies through a formalised University-wide programme. • To provide systematic academic and research programmes, geared towards the high level manpower needs of the country and the world.
• To achieve excellence in staff, research, consultancies, academic content and graduands through cutting-edge research and by employing up-to-date data acquisition, information analysis, and knowledge delivery systems.
• To provide advanced courses of instruction and other facilities for the pursuit of high-quality postgraduate programmes, throughout the university to all persons irrespective of race, creed, sex, or political conviction and consequently provide the general society with the needed high-quality manpower”.

Notable Achievements of UNILAG

So far, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has made some outstanding achievements and they are listed below.

1. Repositioning the university as a first-class 21st Century university by the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the school Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
2. The ability to create awareness about the need for faculty members to accelerate needs-driven research and attract more research grants to the university under the leadership of Professor Ogundipe.
3. The creation of 10 research centers on campus.
4. Under the leadership of Prof. Ogundipe, there have been donations of laboratory equipment worth N20 million and 400, 000 dollars.
5. Admission of UNILAG to Global Epic, an  international group of 21 institutions working to co-create and adopt world-changing solutions to cybersecurity all over the world.
6. Renovation of hostels and other projects.
7. Provision of more security equipment on campus.
8. Establishment of UNILAG TV, the first of its kind in Nigeria, and attraction of about N349.2 million and 855,277 dollars in training and capacity building to staff and students of the university.

Challenges facing UNILAG

The University of Lagos has made great achievements over the years and along the line, they have also faced some great challenges. Here are the challenges facing Unilag today.

1. Unsteady Power Supply (Electricity):

The university is blighted by an erratic power supply, which the school authority has identified to be technical problems in the power distribution system of Eko Electricity Distribution Company.

2. Students/Civic Right Abuse:

UNILAG students have been known to have, over the years, staged peaceful protests effectively without the presence of a student body. For this reason, students have taken it upon themselves to stage protests against the school authority. As a result of these incessant protests, the school has become dwindling in popularity.

3. Lapses in e-Learning System:

According to Mr. Alabi, students of the UNILAG have recounted “where submission of test results fails on the platform or correct answers marked as being wrong, while some cannot access the platform to take the tests, which makes the students feel that they are being set up for failure.” He added that e-learning should make education easy, not difficult.

Also, the lawmakers urged the school to find provisional solutions that would enable the students and lecturers to ease the online learning system, even if it means adopting a combined system while strictly following all COVID–19 protocols.
