About UNIPORT

The University of Port Harcourt is a university in the city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. It was established in 1975[5] as University College, Port Harcourt, and was given University status in 1977. The University of Port Harcourt was ranked the sixth in Africa and the first in Nigeria by Times Higher Education (THE) in 2015. The University of Port Harcourt is currently ranked sixth in Nigeria and 2102 in the World according to Webometrics.

Brief History of UNIPORT

Founded in 1975, the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is a second-generation Federal University located in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria with over 50,000 students and a strong focus on Petroleum Engineering. The citadel play host to many students from different ethnic nationalities, Local and foreign nationals. Formerly known as University College, Port Harcourt, UNIPORT has been ranked amongst the top ten universities in Africa and the first in Nigeria by Times Higher Education (THE); a UK-based source for higher education information.

UNIPORT has reached a milestone by being the first university to train the first set of Nuclear Engineers in Nigeria. The University also has a World Bank center of excellence in oilfield chemicals and the Institute of Petroleum Studies, IPS.
The Africa Center of Excellence in Oilfield Chemicals Research (ACE-CEFOR) is one of 22 World Bank-funded Centers of Excellence established in 2013, to promote homegrown and regional research networks that will help to develop human capital in Africa.
IPS Program is an International Collaborative Graduate Program between IFP School, France, and the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, run in IPS and sponsored by NNPC and TOTAL E & P Nigeria Limited Joint Venture.
The University has been noted as one of the best institutions in Nigeria involved in the study of business ethics and indigenous entrepreneurship development. Team Uniport has been consistently dominant when it comes to sports in universities both locally (NUGA) and internationally (WAUG) for decades.

Objectives/Roles of UNIPORT

The objectives of the school, strategically are given below.

  1. To provide human-capital development services to students through teaching, learning, counseling, supervision, and exchange of programmes with both local and foreign tertiary institutions and research centres’.
  2. To provide human capital development and advisory services to clients in the major areas of Management Sciences, namely Accounting, Actuarial Science and Insurance, Finance, Banking, Management, Marketing and Information Systems and Technology, Entrepreneurship, Hospitality Management, and Tourism
  3. To protect, promote and advance the knowledge of Management Sciences through research, teaching, conferences, seminars, workshops, inter-varsity and inter-country visitations, fellowship, and co-operations.
  4. To explore and utilize opportunities and cooperation with relevant reputable professional bodies in the nominated areas of management sciences in a bid to bring the academia and the industry together in the wheel of progress and concerted development.

Notable Achievements of UNIPORT

The university of port Harcourt has received a lot of recognition, awards, and achievements. Below are some of the Notable Achievements of UNIPORT led by the vice-chancellor of the school.

Professor Lale has been able to:

  • fight for the qualified but victimized staff in their quest for promotion and prevented the promotion of undeserving people, through reasoned, evidence-based arguments.
  • initiate a reform that has proved very beneficial to the university.
  • the positive disposition of students to payment of charges and fees.
  • the redefinition of the attitude of students and staff to their studies and work, respectively.

Challenges Facing UNIPORT

Some of the challenges facing UNIPORT are discus below;

  • Poor funding: poor funding and inordinate ambition by some vice-chancellors, among other factors, are crippling the performance of these institutions.
  • Political Interference: Often external political interference is never far away as powerful politicians seek vice-chancellors who will do their bidding in the recruitment of Adhoc staff during elections. Vice chancellorship position has been bastardized as state governors appoint and dethrone vice-chancellors at will.
  • Huge backlogs of both academic and administrative promotions are pending approval by a non-existent Governing Council.
  • The problem of examination malpractice
  • Inordinate ambition etc
