Universities key to national growth through research – Bogoro

Former executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro, has called on universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria to prioritize research and community services.NYSC Portal

He stressed the importance of carrying out research projects to their conclusion, with clear objectives and anticipated deliverables that are problem-solving in nature.

Professor Bogoro cited the example of Malaysia, where the injection of science and innovation allowed them to transform the oil palm industry into a lucrative value chain.informationguidenigeria

Professor Bogoro also highlighted the significance of partnerships between universities and industries through research, as seen in initiatives like the TETFund Research and Development Standing Committee (RDSC), which combines academic and industry expertise.JAMB Portal

He suggested that universities should engage in community services to maintain relevance in both local and broader contexts.

Professor Bogoro commended the efforts of President Bola Tinubu in addressing issues related to lecturers’ salaries in public universities and the approval of a Student Loan Scheme to support students from indigent families.

With increased budgetary allocation for the education sector and the Education Tax raised from 2.50% to 3.00% through TETFund, Professor Bogoro recommended that more funds be allocated to address non-budgetary funding priorities for public tertiary institutions, aligning with the original purpose behind the establishment of TETFund.
