We’ll not accept coup in West Africa anymore – Tinubu

Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that coup after coup will no longer be accepted in countries within the West African sub-region. THE GUARDIAN reports.Information Guide Nigeria

Tinubu stated this yesterday after emerging as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The Nigerian leader was chosen at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

To underscore his commitment towards regional integration, he declared that he would prioritize political stability, peace and security, regional economic integration and strengthening of the ECOWAS institutions.

While decrying the emerging pattern of coup d’etat in West Africa where soldiers have toppled the popular mandate of the people through barrel of guns, he charged ECOWAS to stand firm in defence of democracy.

“We must stand firm on democracy. There is no governance, freedom, and rule of law without Democracy. We will not accept coup after coup in West Africa again,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu succeeds President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau as ECOWAS chairman.

The 63rd Ordinary Session summit was Tinubu’s first engagement within the African continent since he assumed office as the president of Nigeria on May 29, 2023.NYSC Portal
