Mundo Diportivo reported on the 7th of October 2013 that former national team coach Marc Wilmots attempted to select Januzaj for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against Croatia and Wales, but Januzaj refused the call-up, saying he still needs to make a choice.

The report has it that on the 23rd of April 2014, Wilmots announced that Januzaj had committed himself to the Belgian national team.
