Club career

Early career

BBC Sport reports that Denayer started playing football at the age of six, playing for FC Ganzoren and then Anderlecht. At the age of thirteen he entered the JMG Academy in Lille. So he turned from striker to defender. Denayer credits his time spent at JMG with honing his football skills. Young people at the academy participate in smaller games focused on technique and education in private schools rather than playing regular competitive football. Manchester City

In July 2013, Denayer joined Manchester City’s academy. In the summer transfer window, Denayer signed his first professional contract with Manchester City after a successful trial. Denayer has been a consistent feature of the club’s season in his UEFA Youth league, with Bayern making eight appearances and scoring once in his 6–0 victory over Munich. Denayer also played a major role in the domestic competition, helping the club reach the final of his cup in the U21 Premier League, where he finished fourth in the Pro U21 Development League.Information Guide Nigeria

Loan to Celtic

According to ESPN reports, Celtic loaned Denayer from Manchester City for a season on 12 August 2014. Denayer has revealed that Vincent Kompany and Patrick Vieira played key roles in his move to Celtic. He was one of Ronnie Deira’s first major signings as Celtic manager.NYSC Portal

Loan to Galatasaray

The report still has it that in the month of August 2015, Galatasaray signed Denayer on loan from Manchester City for one of his seasons. Denayer played his first game for Galatasaray on the 15th of September 2015 in his UEFA Champions League match against Atlético Madrid. Despite losing 2–0, the Belgian defender put in an impressive performance. He then made his league debut on 19 September against Trabzonspor, playing at right-back and helping his new side to keep a clean sheet in a 1–0 draw. Loan to Sunderland

According to Skysport, the player joined Premier League club Sunderland on 31 August 2016 for one season. However, Sunderland performed poorly and were eventually relegated. Denayer struggled with consistent performances and was often placed in midfield rather than his natural position as a defender. Second loan to Galatasaray

On 31 August 2017, Denayer re-signed with Galatasaray on loan for his 1st season. In a 2–0 win over Osmanlisspor on 28 January 2018, Denayer completed 60 successful passes, eclipsing the previous Sper Lig set by Atiba Hutchinson of Besiktas in the 2014–15 season. Beat the record. Lyon

Skysport report has it that on the 21st of August 2018, the midfielder joined Ligue 1 side Lyon for €6.5m on a four-year deal. Denayer was a regular in the team and in the 2018–19 season he made 31 appearances and scored twice. As of 2013, Denayer has represented Belgium at various levels, including Belgian U19 and Belgian U21.

It was reported by various sources that on the 2nd of October 2014, national team manager Mark He Wilmots called him up to the Belgian national team for the first time for his Euro 2016 qualifier against Andorra. Denayer played in the Euro qualifiers against Bosnia and Wales and the friendly against Iceland. However, he was an unused substitute in each of those four games.

Talksport report however has it that the player made his international debut for Belgium on the 31st of March 2015 during his UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier at Teddy’s stadium in Jerusalem. He replaced Aston Villa striker Cristian Benteke in a 1-0 win to lift Belgium to the top of the group. Denayer made his first start for his senior side on 7 June 2015 in a friendly match against France in Paris, where Belgium won his 4–3 victory.
