Early career

Manchester City

In July 2013, Denayer joined Manchester City’s academy. In the summer transfer window, Denayer signed his first professional contract with Manchester City after a successful trial. Denayer has been a consistent feature of the club’s season in his UEFA Youth league, with Bayern making eight appearances and scoring once in his 6–0 victory over Munich. It was reported by various sources that on the 2nd of October 2014, national team manager Mark He Wilmots called him up to the Belgian national team for the first time for his Euro 2016 qualifier against Andorra. Denayer played in the Euro qualifiers against Bosnia and Wales and the friendly against Iceland. However, he was an unused substitute in each of those four games.
