What is 6G?
Following on from 5G, the sixth generation of wireless technology designed to enable cellular data networks is referred to as “6G.”
It is challenging to characterise 6G because there isn’t yet a consensus on what 6G will look like. But it’s anticipated to be substantially quicker and more powerful than 5G, enabling it to handle a variety of devices.
“In the 6G era we will see applications that will not only connect humans with machines but also connect humans with the digital world,” said Nokia Bell Labs head of access and devices research Peter Vetter back in 2020 when the company announced it’d be leading the EU’s research into 6G with its project Hexa-X.
“Such a secure and private connection can be used for preventive healthcare or even to create a 6G network with a sixth sense that intuitively understands our intentions, making our interactions with the physical world more effective and anticipating our needs, thereby improving our productivity.”

When will 6G be released?
The introduction of 6G has not yet been assigned a date. The adoption of 5G just really took off in the last few years, while 6G research and development are still in their infancy.
However, if you take a look at how past generations were adopted, it appears likely that 6G will be available around 2030. In the early 2000s, 3G launched, followed by 4G and 5G in the 2010s and 2020s, respectively. If this trend holds, 6G will launch in the next 8 years.
