The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority became autonomous when the Civil Aviation Act of 2006 was passed into law, by the National Assembly and was given the assent of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria respectively.

The Act has empowered the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to carry out a broad range of activities for the purpose of realizing the purpose to which, it was established.

The empowerment of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority was not only limited to the regulation of Aviation Safety, void of political interference, but it was also empowered to carry out certain oversight functions within the Nigerian Airports, and Airspace, and Meteorological Services, among others, including economic regulations of the aviation industry in Nigeria.

1. Regulates Safety Of Aircraft Operations

As stated earlier, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority is undertaking a wide range of services to the general public, and part of these functions is to regulate the activities of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for the safety and comfort of the flying members of the public.

Therefore, regulation of the safety of aircraft operations in Nigeria remained one major functions of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
