8 Functions Of UNESCO In Nigeria

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO remains United Nations agency with a specialized responsibility to promoting education around the world.

Education, they say, is the bedrock of every development, it is important for the achievement of anything, including life itself.

Through education, things like environmental awareness, things like ethical awareness, things like values, things like attitude and skills, things like good behaviour can be achieved.

Behavior that is consistent or that can bring about sustainable development in the society, behaviour that encouraged public participation any time there is decision to be  made. Whether formal or informal education, education has the power to bring about sustainable development, this is true.

To attain sustainable development through education, there is need for anew vision, a new vision to drive educational sector, and as we, encourage it to develop a new curriculum, that will impart knowledge, that would make individuals responsible citizens of their individual society, and make them better understand the world around them.

The type of education that will give the people hope of existence, and give the confidence to face the future with a renewed hope.with such conviction that they can handle issues that may seems to threatened their existence in the future.

These threatening issues could be poverty, corruption, unemployment, crime, violation of human rights, lack of respect for law, name them.

And for such new vision to be achieved, every stakeholder in education sector must be up and doing, beginning from teachers, and educators, and curriculum developers, and education policy makers as well as authors of educational materials, all working together to promote a system of education that will encourage people to embrace ethics and values, such that would be sensitive to cultural identity, sensitive to multicultural dialogue, sensitive to democratic decision-making, as well as sensitive to the appropriate use of natural resources.

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization is working assiduously to ensure that this is achieved.

What is UNESCO?

The acronym UNESCO means United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. UNESCO is the United Nations’ agency with a particular mandate of advancing education for the purpose of attaining sustainable development.
