Instagram receives massive fine over child privacy

Instagram has been penalised 405 million euros ($403 million) for breaking the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union, which prioritises privacy (GDPR).

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) imposed the fine due to Instagram’s management of the app’s child-friendly privacy settings.Information Guide Nigeria

The amount of the penalties, which is anticipated to be made public in the next several days, was first revealed to Politico and later confirmed to TechCrunch.

Instagram’s processing of children’s data, which occasionally made information like email addresses and phone numbers visible, was the subject of the DPC’s investigation. It also investigated why some children’s profiles were created with public settings by default rather than private ones.

Responding to news of the fine, a spokesperson for Meta told Politico: “This inquiry focused on old settings that we updated over a year ago, and we’ve since released many new features to help keep teens safe and their information private.”

The spokesperson added that anyone under the age of 18 “automatically has their account set to private when they join Instagram, so only people they know can see what they post, and adults can’t message teens who don’t follow them. We engaged fully with the DPC throughout their inquiry, and we’re carefully reviewing their final decision.” We should know next week if Meta plans to appeal the fine.

Instagram has long been chastised for how it handles privacy issues for its younger users, but even controlling who uses the app is difficult. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account, but it took Instagram until 2019 — nine years after its launch — to begin asking users to confirm their age when creating an account. Even so, children can simply lie about their birth date to keep the setup process going.

As Meta’s spokesperson mentioned, Instagram has made greater efforts in recent years to implement measures to protect children’s privacy, as well as other features aimed at making the app safer for younger users.JAMB Result
