Dogara dumps APC for PDP

Yakubu Dogara, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.Information Guide Nigeria

This comes less than 48 hours after Dogara and some disgruntled northern APC leaders announced their support for Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The Northern Elders Consultative Forum, including Christian leaders in the All Progressives Congress in the North, publicly endorsed Atiku on Friday, after several months of political maneuvering.

According to them, Atiku was chosen as a result of the Northern Christian leaders’ decision to collaborate with their Muslim counterparts to adopt one of the presidential candidates in an effort to derail the APC’s same-faith presidential ticket.

Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate and former vice president, welcomed Dogara into the party during the presidential campaign in Lagos State, the nation’s commercial hub.

Dogara left the PDP and joined the APC in 2020.

Mai Mala Buni, then-chairman of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Committee, told State House correspondents at the time that President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.) was pleased by Dogara’s return to the party.

Before the 2019 general election, Dogara, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and several governors deserted the APC for the PDP.

Fast forward to 2022, Dogara has not only stated his support for Atiku but also switched to the opposition party, as the Dogara-led Northern Elders Consultative Forum believed the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket was a detriment to the ruling party.NYSC portal

The group asserted that the selection was influenced by the current structure of the PDP, the qualifications of the applicants, evidence of national penetration, and religious and ethnic balance, among other factors.

It was observed that the APC and PDP are almost identical in terms of political structure, but the albatross around the APC’s neck is the “unfortunate self-inflicted divisive same-faith-ticket which cannot guarantee the desired peace, unity, and cohesion in Nigeria, a decision that has been rejected by a large portion of the Nigerian population.”JAMB portal

Dogara was appointed as a member of the PDP Campaign Council on Sunday.
Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, who is also the Director-General of the PDP PCO, announced the appointment in a statement issued on Sunday.

Part of the statement read, “The leadership of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council wishes to formally announce that Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has been appointed as a member of the Presidential Campaign Council with immediate effect.

“This is part of our continuous effect in joining hands with our presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to recover our great country, Nigeria.”JAMB Result
