Japan’s earthquake death toll hits 110

Five days after a devastating 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Ishikawa region in central Japan, the death toll has tragically risen to at least 110 people. The quake, which occurred on New Year’s Day, has caused widespread destruction on Japan’s main Honshu island, particularly impacting the city of Wajima on the Noto peninsula and Suzu, where many homes have been destroyed.InformationGuideNigeria

Rescue efforts have shifted from searching for survivors to recovering bodies and initiating clean-up operations. The situation remains dire, with 210 people still reported as unaccounted for, indicating that the death toll may continue to rise.

The challenging task faced by the thousands of rescue workers has been compounded by adverse weather conditions. Snow was forecasted for Sunday, and the area has experienced significant infrastructural damage. Roads have been severely disrupted by cracks and approximately 1,000 landslides, making access to affected areas more difficult.

Among the few moments of hope was the rescue of two elderly women from the wreckage of their homes in Wajima on Thursday. However, since then, there have been no further reports of survivors being found.

“Training for disaster rescue dogs begins with something similar to a game of hide-and-seek,” canine trainer, Masayo Kikuchi, told AFP.

“Finally, they are trained to bark when seeing a person under the rubble,” Kikuchi stated.NYSC Portal

“The tsunami came from the cove of Shiromaru through the river, and then ran up through the street,” said one of its roughly 100 residents, Toshio Sakashita.

“We cannot live in our house anymore,” Yukio Teraoka, 82, told AFP as he and his wife shovelled heavy, sodden sand brought by the waves out of their wrecked home.
