An embarrassment for Brazil! The South American champions crash out in the Women’s World Cup group stages

Brazil was eliminated from the Women’s World Cup group stage on Wednesday after a 0-0 tie clinched Jamaica’s historic place in the last 16. InformationGuideNigeria

Brazil held the majority of possession in the first half but struggled to generate anything, with Ary Borges headed over from eight yards out following a superb cross from Luana the highlight of the first 45 minutes. JAMB Result

The South American champions came out with greater urgency in the second half, with Bia Zaneratto looking energetic after replacing Borges at the break, but they still lacked cutting edge against a Jamaica team that had yet to concede in the tournament. Instead, it was the Reggae Girlz who grew into the game, with Bunny Shaw racing through on goal in the closing 10 minutes but shooting wide.

It didn’t matter, though. Jamaica simply needed a draw to make the final 16 for the first time, and they got it, while Brazil will face significant concerns following an unbelievable, inconceivable exit. JAMB Portal

It’s difficult to pick a standout performer from the Jamaica defense, as they held their own brilliantly to ensure Brazil couldn’t create anything to win the game, but, as she was in the draw against France, right-back Tiernny Wiltshire was particularly impressive as she returned to the starting XI.

How do you put into words how much of a failure this was for Brazil? They seemed absolutely stumped for ideas throughout the game as they fell out in the group stages for the first time since 1995. The most heartbreaking aspect was that this was probably certainly Marta’s final World Cup event, the greatest player to ever play the game bowing out on the largest stage in spectacular fashion.  Jamaica will take on the winner of Group H in the last 16, with Colombia currently sat in pole position. France, meanwhile, won Group F with a 6-3 victory over Panama securing their place in the knockout rounds. They look set to face Germany in a mouth-watering clash, unless things change dramatically on Wednesday.
