Chief Imam tussle: Islamic scholar warns Adeleke against imposition

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has been warned to steer clear from the lingering crisis bedeviling the Muslim community in Inisa town, DAILY POST  reports.

The warning was issued by an Islamic scholar, Abdulrasaq Amad at a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday.JAMB Portal

Amad also urged Governor Adeleke to allow due process in the selection of new Chief Imam of Inisa.

The Imam position of Inisa became vacant following the death of Imam Surakatu Asiyanbi, rahimahuLlaah, in July 2020.

DAILY POST recalls that former governor, Adegboyega Oyetola had in 2021 temporarily closed down the Inisa Central Mosque over the lingering leadership tussle.

The cleric, who disclosed that the issue is being currently addressed by the court, added that the current JUSUN strike in the state was responsible for the delay in adjudication of the case.InformationGuideNigeria

Amad also stressed that rather than imposing a Chief Imam, the State Governor should allow indigenes who have in depth knowledge on the process to do the needful.

“We want to call on the Governor to please stay away from this matter, and allow Inisa indigenes home and abroad who have vast knowledge on how a chief Imam is being selected, to carry out the process.

“We also urge the Olunisa of Inisa and all the chiefs to please stay away from the Chief Imam selection process and allow due Islamic process be followed.

“We want due process like screening, qualities, exams among other Islamic processes of selecting Imam to be carried out,” he said.

One of the contenders, who claimed to have been decorated as the Chief Imam, Tijani Kolawole, narrated that Muslims in the town selected him as the chief Iman.

“I was turbaned in the morning, but in the evening someone named Alhaji AbdulAkeem was brought and decorated as the chief Imam.

“So after this, the then Governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola, called on all Osun Imams to sort the issues in selection of the Chief Imam but that they should bring a neutral person to serve as an interim Imam,” he said.

He added that they were recently invited to the State Government Secretariat, Abere by Aderibigbe Rasheed, the Commissioner for Home Affairs.

“To our surprises, despite the fact that the case is still in the court, the Commissioner said Governor Adeleke has instructed him to install AbdulAkeem as the Chief Imam.NYSC Portal

“When this incident happened, the Governor wasn’t around, so we believed he wasn’t aware but to our surprise, the Governor came to Inisa to perform Jumat prayer and raised AbdulAkeem’s hand up as the Imam.

“We were moreover, further taken aback when the governor led other members of his government in flagrant disobedience to the order of court which restrained the said Alhaji Abdulhakeem from leading prayers at Inisa Central Mosque.JAMB Result

“We therefore use this opportunity to warn members of the public, particularly the Inisa Muslim community, to be wary of the action of these cabals who are determined to foist on the court a situation of helplessness in a matter to which all parties have submitted adjudication to the judiciary,” he cautioned.
