Emmanuel Amuneke, former Super Eagles winger and 1994 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, has clarified his position regarding the voting process for the 2023 CAF Player of The Year award. Following a backlash from Nigerian fans over a video shared by CAF, Amuneke stated that he did not participate in the poll that resulted in Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen winning the award.
The controversy arose after the video depicted Amuneke seemingly favoring Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, another finalist alongside Moroccan Hachraf Hakimi, in his selection. This led to criticism from Nigerians who supported Osimhen.
