4. Choose cassava stem cutting that is healthy

The next step that follows is choosing your stem and it should be healthy. Consider the following when picking stem cuttings:

a. Do not choose stems from plants with disease and pest damage.

b. Branches that have leaves are fresh and healthy and strong stems

c. Choose the cassava with 5-8 nodes and then cut the cassava stem.

Purchase the stems of the crop and you can get this from the market and local farms. Using the stem from your farm is beneficial and you can use this for planting next time.

5. Cassava Planting Process

Start planting your cassava and this is after you till the land with mechanical or manual method. You can also plant the stem using 2/3 of the length within the ground. Farming the crop requires water and it is preferable to do your plant on time.

Planting on time has to do with when the rains come and this helps yield. A hectare of land can make up to 12-15 tons and this with proper planting and preparation. Do weeding constantly after planting and this is to eliminate weed.

You can also till or leave plants that are leguminous and this promotes nutrients of the soil. Do weeding after two weeks of planting and fertilizer application also promote yield.

There are many items to process the crop into and this include bread, flour and garri. This crop is also a material that can undergo processing into pharmaceuticals, biofuels, paper and ethanol. There may challenges in the cassava processing business like finance and variety.

You can get some from research centres and go for loans. You can start small if you don’t have enough capital and remember that the demand is still high.
