The 10th National Assembly in Nigeria is currently considering 32 legislative measures aimed at establishing new universities, polytechnics, and other educational institutions.

This surge in proposals for new institutions comes amidst concerns from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other educational experts, who warn against the proliferation of new institutions while existing ones suffer from inadequate funding.

The National Board for Technical Education reports the existence of 40 federal polytechnics, 49 state-owned polytechnics, and 76 private polytechnics.JAMB Portal

Additionally, there are 70 federal and state-owned colleges of health and 17 private colleges in the country. The National Commission for Colleges of Education records a total of 219 colleges of education.JAMB Result

The push for new institutions is led by notable figures in the House of Representatives. The Speaker has proposed the establishment of the Federal University of Technology in Kaduna, while the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, is advocating for the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Bende, Abia State.

Other proposed institutions include the Federal University of Information and Communications Technology in Lagos Island, the Federal University of Agriculture in Ute Okpa, Delta State, and various federal colleges in different states.NYSC PORTAL
