At Stamford Bridge, it was a night of transition. Liverpool scored six goals in their weekend thrash at the Etihad. Chelsea’s manager has been replaced by Bruno Salter following Graham Potter’s dismissal. Kante, the captain on the night, led from the start, adding a new dimension to Chelsea’s play. His energy is unrivaled. His presence was unmistakable. His influence was undeniable. From tracking back and halting any sign of a Liverpool counter to driving forward and being at the heart of Chelsea’s transitions, he has done it all.

Not that Kante needed any. He was back on his feet after a sip of water and a squeeze of an energy gel sachet.
With his work rate, you’d never guess the 32-year-old was fasting if it weren’t for the break.
