No provision for 2024 census in NPC budget, says Senate committee

During a recent meeting of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, members were taken aback upon learning that the 2024 budget proposal for the National Population Commission (NPC) did not include funding for the scheduled 2024 population and housing census. This revelation was made by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP Bauchi Central), Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Population Commission, while presenting the NPC’s 2024 budget report to the collating Committee.JAMB Result

Senator Ningi highlighted the critical nature of this oversight, noting that the absence of a budget allocation for the census could result in the country losing approximately N200 billion, which the National Population Commission has already spent in preparation for the census. This situation underscores the importance of ensuring proper budgeting for significant national projects.

To address this issue, Senator Ningi mentioned that the NPC would make an appearance before the committee the following Wednesday, armed with documentation to clarify how much funding they require to conduct the 2024 population census.

The population and housing census is a crucial exercise for Nigeria, providing essential data for planning, policy-making, and resource allocation. The lack of budgetary provision for this exercise in the NPC’s budget proposal poses a significant challenge, not just for the commission but for the country’s planning and development efforts.InformationGuideNigeria

Ningi said, “They will appear tomorrow (Wednesday) with proper documentation of how much they need. If we don’t get the money, the nation will lose, the people will lose, the money spent on the preparation for the census will go down the drain and it is a humongous amount of money, over N200 billion already spent that is my take.”
