Ogun sensitises residents to cholera outbreak, others

The Ogun State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN) has initiated a vital sensitization and awareness campaign aimed at preventing cholera and other water-borne diseases. This proactive step comes in response to a cholera outbreak that occurred about four months ago in the state, affecting over 200 people and resulting in at least 10 deaths.JAMB Portal

The state Commissioner for Rural Development, Mrs. Olufemi Ilori-Oduntan, emphasized the importance of this campaign during an event in the Surulere community, Agbo-Afoju, Sabo, located in Abeokuta North Local Government Area.InformationGuideNigeria

She highlighted that the awareness campaign was crucial, especially during the dry season when water levels in wells decrease, leading residents to turn to less reliable water sources.NYSC Portal

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ilori-Oduntan, represented by RUWATSAN’s Programme Manager, Mr. Sola Ogunbo, stressed the need for proper hygienic practices and a change in attitudes to ensure a disease-free society. She advised the community members to maintain clean drainages, avoid indiscriminate refuse dumping, and ensure that each household has proper toilet facilities. The commissioner warned about the numerous ailments associated with unhygienic practices, including typhoid and dysentery.JAMB Result

Dr. Munir Adesola, Chairman of the Ilupeju Oke-Odo Community Development Council, praised the agency for its efforts. He stated that the campaign would encourage people to adopt hygienic lifestyles and urged the government to make such initiatives continuous and extend them to other communities across the state.

The sensitization event included several key activities such as the disinfection of selected water sources, demonstrations of handwashing, methods of water purification and treatment, and the distribution of wash materials to representatives of over 50 Community Development Associations.
