Oneplus 2: Review, Specifications And Price

This is the successor to the Oneplus one launched last year. And just as expected, the company built upon the success recorded in the release of the Oneplus one.

Sturdy design, great processor, good camera, long lasting battery and to wrap it up, a decent price tag for a device with such amazing specs.

However, the Oneplus 2 is not without flaws. Non-removable battery, no SD card space and lacks fast charging technology like most flagship phones.

Design of Oneplus 2

The Oneplus 2 might not be the best physically designed phone this year. But it sure sports a decent design. At 9.9mm body size with weight of 175g, the phone still looks premium and sturdy. All thanks to the sandstone plastic rear cover and the magnesium alloy frame which makes the device easy to grip.

By default, the Oneplus 2 comes in sandstone rear cover that is black. But, this can be replaced with a rear cover of different colours and textures. This is possible because of the removable rear cover.

However, the battery is still non-removable despite the removable rear cover.

The rear cover is available in the following colours; bamboo, rosewood, black apricot wood and Kevlar.

The front of the phone is finished with Gorilla Glass 4 for protection while accommodating the 5MP secondary camera and LED notification light at the top. With clicky home button at the bottom. This also works as the finger print scanner for unlocking the phone.

The beautiful alloy rim houses the volume button at the right while the power button and the 3-way alert slider are located at the other end. This 3-way slider gives a user the option of either turning on/off notifications.

The bottom part of the rim houses the new type-C USB port and two speaker holes flanking it. While the headphone jack is rightly placed at the top.

Flip the phone over and you will find the 16MP rear camera and the dual LED flash. Both are situated a bit lower than usual. Then a bit lower, you will find the Oneplus logo.

Removing the rear cover, you will find the dual nano-SIM tray.

Display of Oneplus 2

Just like it’s predecessor, the Oneplus 2 sports a 5.5 inch screen(full HD), a resolution of 1080 by 1920 and 73.3 percent screen to body ratio.

The Gorilla Glass 4 ensures that the screen of your premium device is always protected against scratch and knocks.

So, with the Oneplus 2, you get that ultra HD experience while watching movies, playing games and of course, surfing the web.

Though, it doesn’t beat the bright and vibrant display of the AMOLED screens on Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4. But, it offers a sharp display like most premium smartphones.

Processor And Operating System of Oneplus 2

The Oneplus 2 runs Android OS v5.1 with OnePlus’s Oxygen UI on top.

While internally, it is powered by an octa core Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 processor clocked at Quad-core 1.56 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 1.82 GHz Cortex-A57. Supported by Adreno-430 GPU.

The phone has the 3GB and 4GB RAM variants with 16GB and 64GB internal memory respectively. But not expandable due to the absence of a microSD card space.

Despite the limited memory space, the company made it clear that the Oneplus 2 can perform any job thrown at it optimally.

So, whether you are playing games, watching videos, or surfing the internet, you are assured of a smooth experience.

In terms of user interface, the Oneplus’ oxygen UI offered little as bulk of the interface still looks and feels like stock Android. Though, still good and user-friendly.

Camera Quality of Oneplus 2

The Oneplus 2 comes fitted with a rear camera of 13MP. With features such f/2.0 aperture, Optical Image Stabilization(OIS) which reduces the effects of camera shakes, laser autofocus, dual LED flash and even a 4k video capture capability.

All These guarantees you of amazing pictures with every important detail in place.

The inclusion of these features offers improvement over the Photo-taking capability of the Oneplus one even in dimly-lit environments.

However, the camera offers limited manual mode settings. Too bad for some of us who likes experimenting with our pictures. But, Oneplus promised an OTA update. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Battery Life of Oneplus 2

The Oneplus 2 is powered by a non-removable Li-Po 3300 mAh battery. This in actual sense is a decent battery for a phone with such stunning features.

However, sometimes huge battery capacity doesn’t guarantee a long lasting battery life. And since I don’t own a piece, I can’t really say anything about the battery performance.

But, with such a powerful processor, am optimistic that the Oneplus 2 will offer a great battery experience.

Unlike most flagship smartphones, the device lacks fast charging technology. And the non-removability of the battery means you can’t carry charged extra battery to change on the go.

Connectivity of Oneplus 2

On the connectivity front, the Oneplus 2 offers you all you can get from a high-end smartphone. Bluetooth v4.1, Wi-Fi, 4G and even GPS.

Summary Of The Key Specs of Oneplus 2

If the review above seem too lengthy for you to read, here is a recap of what the review is all about.

However, taking time to read the review would provide you with important details that may aid you in making buying decisions which the summary below does not contain.

Screen Size: 5.5 inch

Rear Camera: 13MP

Front Camera: 5MP

OS: Android OS v5.1(Lollipop) & Oxygen UI

Oneplus 2: The Pitfalls

1. Disappointingly, the battery of this device is not removable despite the removable rear cover. Making the battery a removable one shouldn’t have been a difficult task.

2. Unlike it’s high-end counterparts, the phone lacks fast charging technology. This would have placed the device at a competitive par with other big players in the industry.

3. No memory card slot. Which means that the memory capacity is limited to the inbuilt memory.

My opinion on Oneplus 2

Despite the above deficiencies, the Oneplus 2 is still a great device. Bearing in mind that the deficient features are not indispensable.

In fact, it remains one the most recent premium smartphones. And at a price of #97,000, it is a good device to go for.

Price Of Oneplus 2 In Nigeria

Originally, this device was sold only by invitation. However, at the time of writing this review, the Oneplus 2 sells for #97,000 at Jumia store. This price may change over time. See current offers at Jumia store.
