The South-East Development Commission Bill has successfully passed its third reading in the House of Representatives, marking a significant legislative achievement. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and fellow lawmakers from the South East region, the bill focuses on the development and rehabilitation of the South-East, addressing the long-standing impacts of the civil war.InformationGuideNigeria

As outlined in the explanatory memorandum of the bill, the commission’s primary responsibility will be to oversee the receipt and management of funds allocated from the Federation Account. These funds are designated for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of critical infrastructure in the region. This includes the repair and rebuilding of roads, houses, and other infrastructural facilities that have suffered damage as a result of the civil war.

The establishment of this commission is a crucial step towards redressing the historical challenges faced by the South-East region. It aims to facilitate significant improvements in infrastructure, which is essential for the region’s overall economic development, stability, and integration into the national framework.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Mr Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu noted that when established, “The commission will as well tackle the ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the Southeast States which include Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi.”JAMB Result

The statement read in part, “The passage of the bill is coming at a time members of the National Assembly from the region led by the Deputy Speaker are championing a new initiative known as Peace in South East Project which is craving for a non-kinetic approach to resolving the socio-economic and sociological challenges and also boost the infrastructural development of the area.JAMB Portal

“The third reading of the bill implies that it will now be taken to the Senate for concurrence before it will be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for his assent to make it a law.”
