S. Korea to take on China, Thailand in World Cup qualifiers

South Korea will face China and Thailand in the second round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will begin in November.Information Guide Nigeria

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held the draw for the mega tournament’s regional qualifiers on Thursday. South Korea, ranked 28th, was drawn in Group C with China, ranked 80th, and Thailand, rated 113th.

The victor of the first round match between Singapore and Guam will be the fourth team in the group.

The first Group C matches will be played on Nov. 16.

The worst 20 teams in the latest FIFA world rankings among the 46 AFC member nations will begin their qualifying campaign in the first round. They were split into ten groups on Thursday, with each team playing one home and one away game on October 12 and 17.

The teams finishing third and fourth will advance to the fourth round, where they will be divided into two groups of three. They will meet once at a neutral site, and the winners of each group will advance to the World Cup.

Each group’s runners-up will advance to the fifth round, where they will compete home-and-away over two legs. The winner team will represent Asia in the inter-confederation playoffs for a spot in the World Cup.

The first two rounds will be drawn on July 27 in Kuala Lumpur.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will feature 48 countries, up from 32 previously.

Asia will now have 8.5 spaces available, up from 4.5 in previous events, with eight direct slots and one inter-confederation playoff slot.NYSC Portal
