Last year’s alumni include Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, Black Sherif, Victony, BNXN, and Buruklyn Boyz, who were all introduced to new fan communities as a result of the program. They represent a diverse spectrum of styles, from West African ambient sounds to the skilled Amapiano of South African townships, R&B, alternative, and the innovative Afropop that has taken the world by storm. Nigerian Bloody Civilian
Bloody Civilian is a genre-defying singer-songwriter and producer from Abuja, Nigeria, with a penchant for storytelling. Civilian’s sound is a blend of alt-R&B and other genres, inspired by her African origin and a diverse spectrum of musical influences. She began studying music production at the age of 12 and has since self-produced her debut track, ‘How To Kill A Man’. Bloody is a rising talent in the industry who is motivated by a passion to promote and enhance African art and history through her music.
Nigerian Ria Sean
Ria Sean is a young Nigerian singer-songwriter whose work incorporates Afro-fusion, pop, and R&B. She has worked with musicians such as Leriq, Moelogo, and Adekunle Gold and has a distinct and diverse voice. Her breakout single ‘Lemonade’ from 2020 received international recognition, and she went on to record her debut EP ‘Fluid,’ which featured productions from Saszy, Dunnie, and Grammy-nominated producer TMXO. Her sophomore album ‘Love Station’ features collaborations with Ayra Starr and French singer Yseult. Ria Sean is a budding R&B singer to keep an eye on.
Ghana’s Baaba J
Baaba J is a 22-year-old Ghanaian singer and songwriter who loves music and movies. Her alternative afro music merges indigenous high life, pop, rap, and soul, creating a distinct sound that has garnered many fans. Baaba J’s debut EP, ‘Lumumba St.,’ which was published in December 2020, served as a huge springboard for her career. She is inspired by her childhood memories of growing up in a large family in Ghana’s port city of Tema. Her music addresses important issues such as culture, love, and identity, and she is on a mission to show the world that Africans, particularly African women, have what it takes to take the globe by storm with their distinctive, multifaceted music.JAMB Result
Kenyan Xenia Manasseh
This Kenyan singer-songwriter has an entrancing voice that adds a fresh and pure tone to the music world. Her debut EP, ‘Fallin’ Apart,’ released in 2019, swiftly rose to the top of Kenya’s R&B/Soul charts and reached an astounding #2 overall. Xenia’s creativity extends beyond her own music, as she has written songs for Teyana Taylor’s ‘Wrong B*tch’ and ‘Shoot it Up’ ft. Big Sean, as well as Vanjess’ ‘Surrender’ from the album ‘Homegrown.’ She has worked with renowned artists such as Sauti Sol, Mr Eazi, and Tay Iwar, and she provided backup vocals on Burna Boy’s ‘Time Flies.’ Xenia Manasseh’s genre-defining R&B style is generating waves not only in Kenya, but also in the major markets of the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and South Africa.
South African Tyla
Tyla’s music is a modern approach on pop and R&B, fusing South African Amapiano with cutting-edge production. Her emotionally expressive melodies began at an early age and have led to international recognition with hits such as “Getting Late.” Her new singles ‘Been Thinking’ and ‘To Last’ demonstrate her versatility and propel her craft ahead. Tyla was determined to discover what had always been hidden within her. ‘Getting Late’ was her breakthrough song, and her late 2021 song ‘Overdue’ featuring DJ Lag and Kooldrink soundtracked the second-season trailer of Netflix’s South African teen drama Blood & Water, but ‘Been Thinking’ and ‘To Last’ find Tyla in complete control of her own story, particularly the emotional ‘To Last.’NYSC Portal
