Brief History of ATBU

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Bauchi, located in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria with Dr. Jerome Udoji and Professor A. O. Adekola as the pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor respectively, while Alh. Adamu Aliyu was the first Registrar of the University.

Objectives/Roles OF ATBU

The following are some of the objectives/roles of ATBU they are given below.

  • To expose students to the broad planning knowledge and analytical capacity in spatial and socio-economic aspects of human settlements.
  • To train Engineers in different fields of Automobile Engineering with high academic standards coupled with adequate practical experience which are able to meet challenges of a developing economy and sufficiently tackle common day-to-day engineering problems.
  • To produce graduates with broad-based knowledge in general studies, management, and humanities, all of which enhance their understanding, contribution, and relevance to society.
  • To produce graduates with a high academic standard coupled with adequate practical experience; to meet challenges of developing economy and sufficiently tackle common day-to-day engineering problems.
  • to train competent graduates in the building construction process, its management, and maintenance.

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University has a chancellor as the ceremonial head of the university, while the Vice-chancellor is the chief executive and academic officer of the university.  Notable Achievements of ATBU

  1. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in 1988 was named in honor of Ni.geria’s first Prime Minister, the late Alhaji (SIr) Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
  2. The University has the approval to run four Schools. By 1990/91 three of the Schools had been established, namely: School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, comprising Animal Production and Crop Production Programmes; School of Engineering and Engineering Technology consisting of Civil, Electrical/Electronic and Mechanical Engineering Programmes; and School of Science and Science Education
    made up of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, General Studies, Geology, Mathematics (including Computer Science), Physics and Science Education Programmes.
  3. The building of a standard school block/library- which comprises of an Exhibition Hall, Reserved Book Room; Reference Stacks, Reference Librarian’s Office, Documents Library, Work Rooms and Offices for the Collection Development Division comprising Acquisitions, Cataloguing and Serials Departments respectively.  Challenges Facing ATBU

There have been some challenges facing ATBU, below are some of the challenges listed.

1. The presence of Power Electricity supply in the school system

2. The problem of Fire outbreaks in the school destroying a section of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi.

3. The presence of a high rate of cultism in the school.

4. Despite the achievement from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Poor policy implementation has been a problem.
