The University of Benin is a public research university, located in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. It is among the universities owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria and was founded in 1970. Brief History of UNIBEN

The University of Benin was established in 1970. It started as an Institute of Technology and was accorded the status of a full-fledged University by National Universities Commission (NUC) on 1st July, 1971. In his Budget Speech in April 1972, the then Military Governor of Mid-Western State, Col. S. O. Ogbemudia (then also Visitor to the University) formally announced the change of the name of the Institute of Technology to the University of Benin. Today, the University has continued to grow from strength to strength with a number of Faculties, Departments, Institutes, and Units. Following NUC’s directives, the University experimented with the Collegiate System in 1991/92 and 1992/93. jamb result

Current Leadership of UNIBEN-Vice Chancellor

The current Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) is Prof. Lilian Imuentinyan Salami.

Professor Lilian Imuetinyan Salami was born on the 8th of August, 1956, to the family of Late Benjamin Idemudia Emovon and Mrs. Alice Omoariagbon both from the Obadan Community in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of the Benin Kingdom. She attended Baptist High School and Itohan Girls Grammar School both in Benin /city from 1969 – 1975. dollar to naira rate

Subsequently, she gained admission into the North Dakota University in Fargo, North Dakota, USA, where she obtained a BSc degree in Home Economics in 1979. She subsequently obtained a Master of Science degree in Nutrition from the same University in 1982.

9 Notable Achievements of UNIBEN

UNIBEN has not only been commended for being a great institution of higher learning in Nigeria but has some great achievements to boast of. These achievements include:

  1.  Critical intervention in projects that uplifted the welfare of employees and students. This achievement was recorded by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Professor Lillian Salami, in her first 100 days in office.
  2. The renovation of hostels, uninterrupted power supply and adequate water supply, as well as improved security on campus.
  3. The provision of adequate hand sanitisers and water dispensers, installed in strategic locations within the campus to further check the COVID-19 pandemic. This has been credited to the leadership of Professor Lillian Salami.
  4. The University of Benin is the first University in Nigeria to develop software independently for the Computer Based Test (CBT) for PUME/PUDE and other internal and external examinations.
  5. UNIBEN is the first African University in history to advance to the final stage of the Petrobowl Championship in USA.
  6. The University was the first public institution to be directed by a female vice-chancellor in the person of Prof. Allele Williams.
  7. In the history of Federal Universities in Nigeria, only UNIBEN has had two female Vice-chancellors, Prof (Mrs) Grace Alele-Williams in 1985 and Professor (Mrs) Lillian I. Salami in 2020.
  8. UNIBEN is among the several institutions affiliated with the Association of African Universities (AAU), An organization whose headquarters is in Accra, Ghana.
  9. The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is among the top 6 first batches of universities in Nigeria. The others include, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna 1962, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State 1962, University of Ibadan, Oyo state, 1948, University of Lagos, Lagos State 1962, University of Nigeria NSUKKA, Anambra 1960. The Challenges facing UNIBEN

Here are the challenges facing UNIBEN today;

  • 1. Poor Funding System.
  • 2. The need for improving classroom facilities and hostel accommodation, and to addressing epileptic power and water supplies.
  • 3. Complaint on harassment of students by some of the lecturers of the school.
  • 4. The challenge of cultism in the school. The management of UNIBEN has put all the necessary mechanisms to bring cultism to the barest minimum.
