UNESCO names Senegal as the true home of Jollof Rice over Ghana and Nigeria

UNESCO has officially recognised Senegal as the homeland of Jollof rice, also known as Ceebu Jen in Senegal, putting an end to a long-running dispute between West African countries Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal.

The origins of Jollof rice can be traced back to the establishment of colonial rule in West Africa between 1860 and 1940, according to research by The Conversation Africa. During this time, French colonists imported broken rice from Indochina to replace food crops.
