Although the protection and promotion of members’ interests remained paramount, the Nigeria Union of Journalists also has a mandate of supervising and monitoring and regulating conducts of its members and the activities of the professional body.

Having said that, what gives the Nigeria Union of Journalists its strengths is the diverse membership of the Union. There is a possibility that, just like any other professional organization, discrimination among members could come to play, in terms of gender and ethnic and origin and age and sometimes, disability.

But the Nigeria Union of Journalists strongly opposed any form of discrimination and any kind of prejudice among its members.

Accordingly, at the inauguration of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, some functions were assigned to it, for the purpose of helping the Union achieve its aims and objectives. And in this article, I will be discussing some of the functions of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

In this article however, I am going to discuss some of the functions of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, nevertheless, below are the functions of the Nigeria Union of Journalists:

1. Nigeria Union Of Journalists Strengthens The Union And Encourages Members To Abide By Union’s Principles

Every professional organization has its principles and standards of practice, and so does the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

What the Nigeria Union of Journalists does in this regard, is to, as part of its statutory functions, encouraged members to abide by the principles that defined the profession.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists will have to make members see the Union as a democratic trade Union, and also to make them contribute their individual quota for the purpose of strengthening the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

2. Nigeria Union Of Journalists Pursues An Improved Conditions Of Service For Members

As a Trade Union, one of the functions of the Nigeria Union of Journalists is to pursue the interests of its members through bargaining for their improved conditions of service.

For instance, the Nigeria Union of Journalists is a trade Union that was established based on the principle that, members’ pay package, as well as their individual conditions at workplace are well improved.

This is one area that members of pen profession are yearning for, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists have to make sure that, it meets this need.
