Biafra: Supreme Court decides Nnamdi Kanu’s fate today

The Supreme Court of Nigeria is set to deliver a judgment regarding Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been detained since June 2021 following his re-arrest in Kenya and extradition to Nigeria. Initially, he faced a four-count charge, including treasonable felony and defamation, which was later replaced by a 14-count charge focusing on terrorism and membership in a proscribed group.

However, these charges were reduced to seven by the court, and then entirely quashed by the Appeal Court. The Nigerian Government appealed this decision at the Supreme Court. Ahead of the judgment, socio-political activist Deji Adeyanju suggested that the Supreme Court should grant Kanu bail.NYSC Portal

He said: “My hope is that the Supreme Court will deliver a judgment that is acceptable to everyone, but no matter what the Supreme Court delivers, it will not be acceptable to some.informationguidenigeria

Our appeal to our judges is that they should deliver a judgment that will make citizens have confidence in the judiciary.

“Kanu should be admitted to bail; bail is not an escape from justice. It’s an opportunity for the defendant to amply defend himself. In my view, this idea of turning people into political prisoners is unacceptable.”
