Security: With each of the frontrunners promising security reforms, many Nigerians hope that a new president will help stem the tide of violence and instability.

Economy: Millions of people in oil-rich Nigeria have seen their purchasing power decline as the country’s currency, the naira, has plummeted to a third of its value in the past five years.

Youth dissatisfaction: Young people are a demographic typically associated with voter apathy, but in this election the youth seem set to make their voices heard.

A change of guard: This election marks the first time since Nigeria’s return to democracy that a former general will not be on the ballot.

Geopolitics: Experts say Nigeria is perceived as a stabilising force in West Africa, and another successful civilian-civilian transition would be key to establishing its influence in the region.

The main political parties in contention are the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the Labour Party, LP, and, of course, the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP.

Here are the 4 major contenders;

Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the presidential candidate of the ruling APC,
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is flying the flag of the PDP,
The former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi is the candidate of the LP,
Rabiu Kwankwaso is the NNPP’s standard bearer.

Other presidential candidates, according to INEC’s final list, include:

Imumolen Christopher – Accord Party (AP); Al-Mustapha Hamza – Action Alliance (AA); Sowore Omoyele – African Action Congress (AAC); Kachikwu Dumebi – African Democratic Congress (ADC); Sani Yabagi Yusuf – Action Democratic Party (ADP); Umeadi Peter Nnanna – All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Ojei Princess Chichi – Allied People’s Movement (APM); Nnamdi Charles Osita – Action Peoples Party (APP); Adenuga Sunday Oluwafemi – Boot Party (BP); Osakwe Felix Johnson – National Rescue Movement (NRM).

Others are: Abiola Latifu Kolawole – Peoples Redemption Party (PRP); Adebayo Adewole Ebenezer – Social Democratic Party (SDP); Ado-Ibrahim Abdumalik – Young Progressives Party (YPP); and Nwanyanwu Daniel Daberechukwu – Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Today’s presidential election is widely expected to be between three candidates: Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Bola Tinubu.

– Clears 18 LGs

The results of the Saturday’s Presidential elections in the eighteen council areas of Ondo State have been announced by INEC.

The State Returning Officer for the presidential election and the Vice Chancellor, Federal University , Oye-Ekiti, Professor Abayomi Fashina, announced the results at INEC headquarters in Akure last night.

APC polled 369,924 votes

PDP polled 115,463 votes

LP polled 47,350 votes

ADC polled 5612 votes

ZLP polled 4783 votes

Gov Ayade loses Senate bid, as Jarigbe wins

The Senator representing othern senatorial district of Cross River in the National Assembly, Sen Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, has defeated Governor Ben Ayade to clinch the Senate seat.

Senator Jarigbe garnered 76,145 to defeat governor Ben Ayade who polled 56, 595 votes in the exercise.
