Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s nominee for president, came in first place on Google Trends for the month of August 2022. According to a report by Pulse Nigeria, Obi narrowly defeated Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lagged behind them.
Remember that the three presidential contenders, along with the leaders of their political parties and statesmen, met in London in August? The London conference sparked discussions about the candidates on social media, with all of them trending on Twitter for days.Information Guide Nigeria

However, Google Trends provides information about the public’s interest in the candidates, the reasons why they are searching about them, and where they are searching from, whereas social media conversations about the candidates were largely driven by their supporters to promote them and criticise other candidates. According to a July article from Pulse, Obi was the most searched for in Nigeria in the first half of 2022. However, a comparison of the candidate-related searches made on Google Trends from Monday, August 1 to Wednesday, August 31, revealed certain trends that might apply to the presidential election in February 2023.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar have received less searches during the period under consideration than the search phrase Peter Obi. For instance, on Saturday, August 13, public interest in Obi increased by 100%. Pulse’s investigation revealed that Obi’s assertion that Sambisa is twice the size of Israel was the reason for the rise in searches concerning him. As was to be expected, a large number of Nigerians criticised the presidential candidate after the assertion was proven to be incorrect.
On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, there was a rise in the number of searches about Tinubu. The increase is related to his campaign management’s telling Obi to exercise cautious when posting on social media. On Monday, August 29, 2022, Atiku Abubakar received the most searches, despite the fact that Obi and Tinubu dominated the search phrase over the entire month.
The former vice president’s journey to Kano State, where he met former governor Ibrahim Shekarau, who switched from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the Peoples Democratic Party, was the only factor that could account for the rise in interest among Nigerians in him at the time (PDP).
The location of the searchers is an additional noteworthy aspect of the vast amount of information on the search engine. The majority of the country’s south, south-south, and south-east regions were where searches for Obi were concentrated. In the North, he had a disproportionate number of searches in the states of Kogi, Plateau Sokoto, Benue, and Kwara.
But Tinubu outperformed him in Lagos and Ogun, where his search keywords accounted for 40% and 47% of all searches during the studied period. The six South-western states, including Lagos and some other states, saw the largest volume of searches for Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State. Tinubu-related searches in the North eclipsed Atiku’s search term in Bauchi, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Gombe state.
In Nasarawa, Kano, and Kaduna states, Tinubu and Atiku also had some notable search percentages in common. It’s interesting to see that Atiku appears to be the only contender running in Jigawa state, as Tinubu and Obi both had 0 percent of searches.

Additionally, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Ekiti, and Kogo states saw some sizable results from his search term. This information somewhat backs up the theory that the front-runner candidates in the 2023 election may engage in a tribal struggle.JAMB Result
