Google’s Equiano submarine cable begins operation in Nigeria by December

Google has announced that its Equiano underwater Internet cable, which landed in Nigeria in April and stretches 12,000 kilometres, will be online by December.Infomation Guide Nigeria

Equiano is currently going via Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, and South Africa, according to Google, and is anticipated to bring quicker, cheaper Internet to the continent by connecting St. Helena, Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, and South Africa to Europe.

Yesterday, during the second Google for Africa event, the company stated that more than 20 percent of the $1 billion announced last year to be invested in the region over the next five years has been deployed.
A recent economic effect assessment undertaken by Africa Practice and Genesis Analytics revealed that by 2025, the cable would accelerate economic growth, with the GDPs of Nigeria, South Africa, and Namibia increasing by $10,1 billion, $7 billion, and $280 million, respectively.

Due to the rise of the digital economy and peripheral sectors, Equiano should indirectly generate 1.6 million jobs in Nigeria, 180 thousand in South Africa, and 21,000 in Namibia during the same time period.

Sundar Pichai, the chief executive officer of Google, announced the company’s intention to develop a new Google Cloud region in South Africa its first on the continent – during the virtual event.

Pichai added that the new Cloud Region would assist users, developers, enterprises, and educational institutions in Africa to move more information and tools online, increase customer access options, and so generate employment.

Nitin Gajria, managing director of Google Africa, stated that the company is partnering with governments, policymakers, NGOs, telcos, business leaders, creators, and media in order to drive Africa’s digital transformation.

Director of Google Cloud Africa, Niral Patel, said: “We believe in growing an open and healthy ecosystem of technology solutions to support Africa’s digital transformation goals, which leads to more opportunities for businesses.
