Nigerian NYSC Problems and Challenges

1. Lack of Funds

3. Poor Leadership

Were NYSC organisers ready to do a good job, they would source for the right places of primary assignment for corps members. Instead, what they do is wait in their offices for those who need the services of corps members to come to them. Imagine a situation where a graduate of civil engineering goes to a primary school to teach. Instead of such a graduate upgrading his knowledge of civil engineering, he would rather be retrogressing. To them, qualified graduates only go there to waste their precious time. Some of the graduates rather bribe their way out of the service year and engage in more meaningful things than go there to waste their time. 9. Tribalism

Another problem facing NYSC in Nigeria is tribalism. The people who established the NYSC scheme made it in such a way that all graduates from any of the universities and polytechnics that are not more than thirty years old, at their graduation year, would serve the country for one year. Such graduates must not serve the country in their states. They believed that such service would foster unity among the diverse tribes in the country.

Today, tribalism has made things different from the original intention. NYSC officials can now allow those who come from their states to serve in their states of origin so long as they are from the same state as them. Thus, tribalism is a problem facing NYSC today in Nigeria.

10. Insecurity

Insecurity is a challenge to the NYSC scheme in Nigeria. Nigeria as a whole is a country bedeviled with insecurity. No part of the country is free from the menace of insecurity. NYSC has lost so many corps members while in service due to the insecurity in the country.
