Ultrasonography, often known as sonography, is a diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an internal body image. This technology is widely known as a way to assess the health of a developing fetus during pregnancy.

Sonography employs ultrasound to diagnose the inside of the human body. Sonography is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound wave pulses to probe tissues, organs, blood vessels, or a developing fetus. The sonographer glides a non-invasive hand-held probe along the skin’s surface to gain various perspectives of the object being photographed. The echoes that bounce off the tissue produce dynamic and crisp visual images that let the doctor look within the body. Information Guide Nigeria

Real-time images are provided via ultrasound or sonography. Ultrasound equipment also allows the sonographer to roll the machine to immobile or critically ill patients without endangering the patient. Because sonography does not use hazardous ionizing radiation like X-ray equipment use, it is a safer method of medical imaging.

In the 1940s, ships traversing the ocean employed ultrasound as a navigational tool by reflecting sound waves off the ocean floor and reading the echoes that returned. This technology, known as SONAR, is still utilized for scientific ocean exploration today. Doctors began using sound waves to treat heart patients in the 1950s and 1960s.

Ultrasound and sonography now use advanced technology combined with powerful computers to generate dynamic images that allow doctors to view various regions of the human body to aid in medical diagnosis.
