Brief History of WAEC

The history of WAEC dates back to 1948, when the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, University of London School Examinations Matriculation Council, and West African Departments of Education met to discuss on matters concerning the future policy of education in West Africa. dollar to naira rate

At the meeting, Dr. George Barker Jeffery (Director of the University Of London Institute Of Education) was appointed to visit some West African countries, so as to see the general education level and requirements in West Africa. At the end of Jeffery’s three-month visit (December 1949 – March 1950) to Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, he tendered a report (often known as Jeffery’s report) strongly supporting the need for a West African Examination Council, and making detailed recommendations on the composition and duties of the Council. Subsequently, the legislative assemblies of Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia passed an ordinance (West African Examinations Council Ordinance NO. 40), approving the West African Examination Council in December 1951. The Ordinance agreed to the coordination of exams, and issuing of certificates to students in individual countries by the West African Examination Council. Liberia later issued its ordinance in 1974, at the annual meeting held in Lagos, Nigeria. In the meeting, the registrar briefed everybody about the progress of the council. Five committees were formed to assist the council, including, Administrative and Finance Committee, School Examinations Committee, Public Service Examinations Committee, The Professional, Technical and Commercial Examinations Committee, and the Local Committee. The total number of people present at the meeting was 26.

Current Leadership of WAEC Chairman

The council’s current chairman is Professor, Ato Essuman, from Ghana. He was elected during the 69th meeting of the council held in march 22-26, 2021.

6 Notable Achievements of WAEC

The introduction of the private candidates’ examinations, a facility for admitting on-the-spot candidates who were unable to enroll within the designated registration period.
The ability to attract other non-WAEC participating countries to participate in the WAEC examination.
The ability to check WAEC result online with apps/mobile phones.
The ability to provide an attestation of results replacement for candidates who lost or damage their results.
The provision of an e-marking software and equipment marking of selected subject papers (Mainly Objective Exercise)
The deployment of software and gadgets for identification of candidates, capturing of data, and detection of irregularities at examination centres.

Challenges facing WAEC

The high rate of examinations malpractice during examination: Uwadiae lamented that exam malpractice had persisted through encouragement by misguided parents, guardians, rogue websites, and school owners using sophisticated methods of cheating.
Poor educational system: It is being said that private institutions are better than government-owned educational institutions in Nigeria. This could be seen due to the employment of unqualified teachers, not monitoring of teachers, and their duties in school.
Unsecure saver: Due to WAEC saver not being secured properly, hackers could break in and as a result, examination papers will get leaked before the day of exams. This is a serious problem and a big challenge WAEC is facing right now.
