TikTok to ban children from livestreaming

The minimum age for livestreaming on TikTok will increase from 16 to 18 beginning next month.

An investigation by BBC News uncovered hundreds of live streams from Syrian refugee camps with youngsters pleading for contributions.Information Guide Nigeria

Some were earning up to $1000 (£900) every hour, but TikTok deducted up to 70% of their earnings when they cashed out.

TikTok stated that in the future, only adults would be able to “send virtual gifts or access monetisation features”

In addition, “in the coming weeks” users would be able to broadcast livestreams including explicit content.

It is unknown, however, how TikTok will enforce these age limitations.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, and Google, which owns YouTube, have a minimum livestreaming age of 13 and already let users to age-restrict uploaded content.

The BBC’s Global Disinformation Unit, BBC Arabic, and BBC Eye Investigations monitored over 300 TikTok accounts livestreaming from northwestern Syria for five months.

According to TikTok’s regulations, users are prohibited from actively soliciting gifts and must “prevent the harm, endangerment or exploitation” of minors on the network.

When News BBC utilised the in-app system to report 30 accounts with minors begging, TikTok stated that none of the accounts had violated company regulations. After BBC News reached out to TikTok for comment, the business deleted all accounts.

This type of content is not permitted on the TikTok platform, and TikTok’s commission on digital gifts is substantially less than 70%, but the precise number has not been confirmed.Jamb Result
