Importance of Citizenship in Nigeria

I have earlier in this article said that, our discussion here will be specifically on the importance of citizenship in Nigeria, and below are some of these importance:

1. Allows Citizens To Vote

Every citizen has the right to vote, therefore, one of the importance of citizenship has been to allow Nigerian citizens express their rights to vote during elections. In a democracy for instance, citizens usually played a greater role in making sure that, decisions in the country are shaped.

The needs, and the desires, and the opinions of the Nigerian citizens can influence elected representatives. Since the citizens have the constitutional rights to vote, they can actually elect political officials whose political ideas they can share.

If the citizens are unhappy with their elected officials for instance, the citizens can decide to vote for another individual in the next election cycle. Citizenship however, has also allowed  citizens to run for political offices during elections in the country.

2. Allows Citizens Permanent Residence

Citizenship in Nigeria allows Nigerian citizens permanent residence in the country. For instance, supposed you are a Nigerian citizen, you can actually file a petition as the case may be, to legally ensure that you bring your relations, and your parents, and siblings, and even your unmarried children who perhaps are minors, and your husband and wife into Nigeria.

As these individuals come into Nigeria, generally, by the virtue of citizenship they will all get their individual permanent resident and legal status in the country.

It also allows Nigerian Citizens to bring their children, who are adults and also their brothers and their sisters into the country, although, getting permanent residence for them may however take a bit longer.

3. Allows Citizens To Own Nigerian Passport

Citizenship allows Nigerian citizens to own Nigerian passport. To have Nigerian passport will allow the Nigerian citizens the freedom of travelling within the country.

A citizen can be allowed to travel for quite long periods of time, and can also be allowed to live outside of Nigeria. Much more important, citizenship will allow Nigerian citizens to receive the Nigerian government protection and the Nigerian assistance when they are abroad.

Further more, a Nigerian citizen can never be deported, and cannot also be sent back to his native country, which of course, is Nigeria.  It is good to know that by the virtue of citizenship, Nigerian citizen is protection against any form of deportation.

4. Allows For Respecting Other Humans

Citizenship allows for tolerance. What is tolerance? Tolerance is not simply about putting up with other individuals who may be different from someone perhaps, in terms of tribe and culture, it is simply about, that spirit of someone trying to understand the other fellow. It is about  judging fellow humans as individuals rather than judging them in terms of class.

Citizenship will allow for living peacefully with other fellows or citizens. Citizenship supports the assertion; “do unto others as you would have them do unto also you.”

5. Supports Education

Citizenship supports education and also supports going to schools. Going to school is every citizen’s right. I think there are some laws in the country that allowed for public education in Nigeria.

For instance, today there are some laws in the country that allowed for compulsory education for every Nigerian child, especially in most of the states within the federation in publicly controlled schools, which are free and compulsory, as well as open to every Nigerian child.

It is quite glaring that, the Nigerian nation’s future is dependent on educated citizens who have acquire relevant knowledge and skills in order to ensure the enhancement of the Nigerian economy.

Citizens, who have kept themselves intellectually informed as citizens who will not allow themselves to be influenced with weakened philosophies but rather with such that can strengthen Nigerian nation.

6. Allows For Giving Back To One’s Community Philosophy

Citizenship also allows for the philosophy of giving back to one’s community. It encourages the Nigerian citizens to work together, because working together with sincerity of purpose as a community can actually help in the accomplishment of so much than ever hope to work alone and achieve alone.

As Nigerian citizens, by the virtue of citizenship, each Nigerian has an obligation to making sure that, the Nigerian community becomes a better place for every Nigerian.

To give back to one’s community, it simply means the act of giving of one’s time, and one’s ability, even one’s money for the betterment of one’s community. However, in other words, one of the importance of citizenship is that, it has allowed for volunteerism in the development of Nigerian society..

7. Allows For Paying Of Taxes

It is the civil responsibility of every Nigerian citizen to pay his or her tax as at when due, nonetheless, citizenship has made possible for Nigerian citizens to comply to this civil responsibility.

If someone works for instance, he has to pay tax. Tax provides for motor highways, it provivdes for police protection and also for fire protection, and clean water, including safe food.

Taxes also provide for the public schools, and libraries, and parks, including everything known as public utility, for example, streetlights among other social amenities. The key importance of citizenship here will be that, it will allow citizens to pay city, and state as well as federal taxes.
