15 Best Inverter Brands in Nigeria, Their Capacity And Prices

As the efforts of the government towards providing stable and constant electricity for Nigerians are yet to yield positive results, the need to find a better alternative is birthed. But is the traditional electricity generator actually a better alternative?

As of today, 1litre of petrol costs about N160. Putting that into perspective, If you buy 5 liters per day, you would have spent N292,000 (two hundred and eighty-eight thousand naira only) on petrol alone by the end of a year (Maintenance and other things excluded).

Now that you are familiar with the kinds of inverters available to you, two other factors that should be considered when buying a power Inverter are the appliances you want to support with the inverter, and the battery (the approximate backup time you want on the inverter). Let’s say you want your Inverter to carry the following appliances; a 400watt electric freezer, a 220watt television, two 60watts standing fan,s and four 10watt led bulbs.

i.e 1*400 +  1*220 + 2*60 + 4*10= 780watts

To calculate inverter capacity which is measured in Volts Ampere you will often see it abbreviated as VA, the formula is: Total load to be supported divided by the power factor.

You should know that the power factor of most inverters ranges from 0.6 – 0.8. We will be making use of 0.8 here.

So 780watts/ 0.8 = 975VA.

Therefore your choice of the inverter for a 780watts load should have a capacity greater than 975VA.

Now, to decide the kind of Battery that is needed to power your inverter. You need to determine the number of backup hours you will be needing. The formula for Battery capacity is given by: Total load to be supported multiplied by backup hours then your answer divided by the voltage which is usually 12volts, 24vols or 48 volts… as the case may be. But for the sake of this explanation let’s use 12volts. For better understanding, let’s say you need an inverter to back up your 780watts for 5hours.FIRS Proposes Road Tax

i.e 780watts * 5hrs/12volts = 325Ampere Hour (AH).

So you need to buy a battery that has a capacity greater than 325AH.

In summary, if the total load to be supported equals 780watts, and you need the backup for approximately 5hours,  you will need an inverter with a capacity greater than 975VA and also a battery with a capacity greater than 325AH.

These are basic things you should know before buying an Inverter. Many people do not understand these things and they put the blames on the Inverter brands.
