These credit passes must include English Language and Literature in English. The choice of the remaining three varies according to the university, and according to the branch of law one is interested in. In fact, to minimize the number of applicants, some of the very competitive institutions have been known to introduce some stringent requirements for intake. For instance, a school might demand aspiring new students to have a credit pass in mathematics to qualify. Of course, this is just a ploy to increase the quality of new entrants’ academic capability, screen out a sizable number, and reduce the intake. When this basic condition has been met, one still needs to go through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) organized Universal Matriculation Examination (UME).
