Elon Musk says Twitter blue tick to be revamped

Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, has stated that the process for obtaining the renowned “blue tick” will be altered, amid rumours that the company may begin charging $20 (£17) per month to be verified.

A few days after assuming control of the social media behemoth, Mr. Musk announced on Twitter that the authentication procedure was being overhauled.Information Guide Nigeria

A blue tick is currently a free method of authenticating an account.

Mr. Musk completed his $44 billion (£37.9 billion) acquisition on Friday and has since changed his Twitter handle to Chief Twit.

Throughout the months of legal fighting preceding the acquisition, the billionaire regularly voiced reservations about the verification procedure and the quantity of spam and bot accounts he claims populate the website.

Mr. Musk’s post on Sunday did not provide any additional information about what might change.

According to an internal memo obtained by the technology website The Verge, Twitter now intends to charge users $19.99 per month to maintain their blue tick verification status.

According to the report, the idea entails quadrupling the price of Twitter Blue, the company’s subscription service, and incorporating verification as one of its features.

It is reported that verified users would have 90 days to subscribe or risk losing their blue tick.

It stated that employees were informed of the proposal on Sunday and instructed to implement the initiative by November 7 or face losing their jobs.

Twitter Blue was introduced in the summer of 2016 and provides customers with access to a variety of premium features, including the ability to delete a tweet.

Currently, participation is optional and costs $4.99 per month.

While there has been no official confirmation of the plot, Mr. Musk appeared to acknowledge the rumours in a fresh tweet on Monday that read, “On the contrary, all of our evil schemes have been disclosed!!

In a separate incident, Mr. Musk has refuted a New York Times claim that he intends to lay off Twitter employees before the beginning of next month in order to avoid having to pay out dividends.

It follows his acquisition last week, which resulted in the departure of the company’s top executives, including its CEO, chairman, and finance head.

The New York Times reported over the weekend that Mr. Musk had authorised widespread employment layoffs at Twitter.

The publication reported that the layoffs would occur prior to November 1, when staff were scheduled to receive substantial grants of company stock as part of their compensation packages.

However, in response to a Twitter user’s inquiry about the allegation, he stated, “This is false.”

The takeover has spurred Twitter users to speculate on the platform’s future appearance under Mr. Musk’s leadership.

Some have expressed worry that more permissive free speech policies could lead to the readmission of those banned for hate speech or disinformation.

Last week Mr Musk said that he doesn’t want the platform to become an echo chamber for hate and division. “Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hell-scape, where anything can be said with no consequences!” he tweeted.JAMB Result

However, after denying the New York Times job cuts report, Mr Musk tweeted a screenshot of a New York Times headline about him posting a link to a “site known to publish false news”.
